The proposed Hebrew interpretation of Mahonri Moriancumer may sound compelling, but a meaningful interpretation is not the same as a demonstrated etymology. The Firm Foundation argument relies on assumptions about Hebrew, morphology, linguistic transmission, and the original form of the name that have not been established. This article examines those assumptions and explains why historical linguistics requires more than finding Hebrew words that appear to fit an existing scriptural narrative.
